Delhi Rises to Dangerous Haze Post Celebrations
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" range.
Record-Breaking Pollution Readings
Multiple areas of the city registered an AQI over 500, which equals 10x the recommended threshold established by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.
Firecracker Prohibition and New Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the deadly haze that blankets the metropolis as the cold season begins.
However recently, the current regional administration appealed to the supreme court to propose a modification of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".
Court Verdict and Enforcement
To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, judges complied with the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Numerous recording stations throughout the capital showed air quality spiking around midnight to the most severe levels recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.
Regional Implications
The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to declining pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the events.
Chronic Environmental Problem
Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Various Contamination Sources
The problem in Delhi is attributed to a combination of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air descends.
Medical and Economic Consequences
The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million people calling home the capital region is substantial, according to various research.
This pollution causes elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely deaths annually in the city.
