Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
